A few months ago, if you had told me I’d be celebrating my birthday in quarantine or not celebrating my daughter’s graduation at all, I would have thought one of us was crazy. Seriously, no one saw this coming.
This season has brought so much uncertainty that we’re all unsure of what will -or not- happen next.
For those of us who need schedules to guide our lives, this feels like total confusion and mayhem. Very few things are within our control.
Whether you’re uncertain about your future in a world turned upside down by COVID 19 or if you’re wondering if God has forgotten that you’re still single and waiting on the “perfect” guy, you’re being setup by God to grow in faith and to trust Him more with your future.
Uncertainty breeds trust!!!
At the risk of sounding like a broken cliché, I must assure you that it’s true.
If you have everything all figured out and you know your next move- when it’s going to happen and how it’s going to happen- there’s nothing left for God to do.
It’s like writing a book. You already know the plot and the storyline before the book is published. That’s great, for you (the author), but not a lot of fun for the readers.
This time, you’re not the author.
God is.
When you have no idea of how the story will end, you can either use this time to worry or stress about conditions that you can’t change, or you can use this time to totally lean on our Father.
If you’re one of those who chose the latter, here’s are three ways to build your trust.
- Be honest with God. Every relationship starts with honesty. If you’re anxious, lonely, fearful, losing hope, or simply tired of waiting—don’t be afraid to pour your heart out to Him (He already knows, anyway). You don’t have to pretend.
He’s just waiting on you to let go and show vulnerability with Him. If you can’t trust Him with your heart, who exactly can you trust? After all, that’s what Jesus did as He was being crucified. He asked God why had “He forsaken Him?” That’s what He was feeling in that moment, and who can blame Him? Whatever you’re feeling in this moment, tell Him.
2. Switch your focus. Instead of locking in on the news and social media, do a cleanse or a fasting from any and everything that’s negative. For a minimum of at least seven days, focus only on God’s promises; loved ones; positive music; good movies and even better food. You’d be surprised by how little you miss those things.
- Praise God. Even though this situation has yet to turn around, God is still God. Feelings and circumstances don’t change his sovereignty. Praise is your weapon against every enemy. There is someone in the world who would love to be in your shoes—no matter how old and worn out you may think they are.
The more you find something or anything to be grateful for, the better you’ll feel.
